About us
Great St Mary's is an open and inclusive Christian community in the heart of Cambridge. Our foundations were laid in 1010, and we have been the University Church since 1209. We are a spiritual home for the University and the City of Cambridge, a Church of England parish in the Diocese of Ely, and a destination for visitors from around the world. We are also a Living Wage Employer, and a Silver-Award Eco Church.
Advent Collection 2022: Cambridge Street Aid & GSM
At our Advent carol service we are collecting for Cambridge Street Aid as well as for Great St Mary's.
City Council Cambridge Street Aid:
There are many reasons why people are on the street – each person has their own story to tell. Many of us instinctively want to help. The Street Aid Fund is doing remarkable work. It offers grants of up to £750 to help homeless or vulnerably people in Cambridge City to find and sustain accommodation and employment or otherwise make changes in their lives which will help them avoid returning to the street, thus making a real difference. The grants help individuals reconnect with families, seek counselling, fund basic items to turn their accommodation into a home, fund training and work-based courses. Street Aid works alongside support agencies such as Jimmy’s and Wintercomfort.

Great St. Mary’s is a welcoming, inclusive, friendly church with a unique spiritual role at the heart of Cambridge and a special ministry which reaches out widely to the community and our many visitors from all over the world. We seek to be a haven of peace where all may find comfort and meaning for their lives, and friendship and fellowship. We strive to serve the needs of everyone in our diverse and ever-changing city and to promote ecumenical and interfaith collaboration. Conscious of our role as guardians of God’s creation we are actively involved in social initiatives and in the care of the planet, and withal, our vision is to bring hope and light to our world.
