About us

Many asylum seekers and refugees have been determined to be at risk for their mental health for a variety of reasons including exploitation, trafficking and modern slavery. This can often involve experiences of mental, physical and sexual violence.

It also includes longer waiting times for their decision from the Home Office. They are not allowed for any kind of paid jobs, getting only £5.66 per day to cover all their expenses, including food, toiletries, travel, mobile and internet, etc. Last but not least, the pain of leaving their own country and own people behind often break them apart. In some cases, many of them develop suicidal thoughts and even attempted it in the past. Studies have shown that poor living conditions and loneliness lead to deteriorating mental and physical health.

Most asylum seekers and refugees do not know the English language and need support to learn it to be able to be integrated with the community.

Programme Description

The Asylum and Refugee Leisure Club will enable at-risk asylum seekers and refugees to improve their mental health through the utilization of our leisure club. They will visit the club to spend quality time, socialize with new people and make good friends. They will have some entertainment through television, computer, different types of games, reading books. We will help them in making communication with their loved ones back in their country through email and phone calls. Asylum seekers and refugees will feel inclusive which will help them fight anxiety and depression. They will have access to snacks and hot drinks and can have some food also if they need it. It will certainly improve their living condition and help them to be a part of this community. They can get support regarding any kind of advice they need, such as getting registered with the GP, dentist and optician, finding a solicitor for them if they need one. We will run ESOL classes to help them in learning the English language etc.
