Andy is running for 12 hrs for Hospice at Home in memory of Paul

Event date: 21st April 2018

Andrew Cittern-Jones is raising money for Hospice At Home West Cumbria

My story

Andy is going to be running for 12 hours around a green in Winnersh, from 9pm to 9am in April to raise money for Hospice at Home. Each lap is about 110m, Andy thinks he will do approximately 1000 laps/69 miles.

Be Your Own Hero was founded by Andy and Claire's friends Jo and Paul in Nov 2016 following Paul's diagnosis with advanced (stage 4) Cancer.

Paul was diagnosed only 48 hours after their wedding day.

Living with cancer as a young family was challenging and along the way Jo and Paul connected with many patients with terminal illness and their carers. They blogged through cancer and connected with people from all across the world.

From their journey they learned that there was always a focus on the medical and the medical aspects can take over life. There was less focus on services offering support to enhance emotional wellbeing- helping people to LIVE with terminal illness.

Be Your Own Hero raises money for the family and bereavement support team for Hospice at Home. This offers:

Complimentary therapies (massage, reiki, mindfulness and reflexology) for patients and their carers and the bereaved.

One to one emotional support for patients, carers and the bereaved

Group support for patients, carers and the bereaved.

Memory boxes and journals for patients to leave for loved ones and literature to help children through terminal illness and death.

A new project will launch in 'Dying Matters' week (May 2018). Funding may go towards this. Details will be released but it will follow the theme of promoting emotional well-being.

Your support will help those with terminal illness and their loved ones to "Be their own hero".
