Grow a Sunflower for Refugees

Sarah Collings is raising money for Wolverhampton City Of Sanctuary, Akwaaba and Aegean Solidarity Network Team Uk

My story

Join the Sunflower Grow-along and raise money for refugees!

Did you ever participate in a sunflower growing competition as a child? This isn't a competition to grow a giant sunflower, but a grow-along to raise money for grassroots charities helping refugees. To get involved;

  • Plant a sunflower seed and make a donation. Suggested donation is £3 if you are growing a sunflower (but you can choose your own amount to donate!)

  • Send us a photo of your seed, seedling and sunflower plant. Measure how tall it grows! We will share photos on Instagram (tag #sunflowergrowalong or @sarahrosegrows) and Facebook (fb.me/sunflowergrowalong ) so you can watch other people's grow too.

  • If you would to dedicate your flower to the memory of a human who has lost their life trying to reach Europe, you can contact 36,000 Humans: 36000humans.co.uk/making

This isn't an exclusive event so please share with your friends. If you can't make a donation you can still grow a sunflower...and if you can't grow a sunflower you can still make a donation!

Why sunflowers?
Sunflowers are a symbol of loyalty, longevity and happiness. It is normal to see them bobbing above garden walls, or staked to bamboo poles in front gardens. This year, 36000 Humans is encouraging people in Birmingham to plant and grow a sunflower in memory of the refugees who have died trying to reach safety in Europe. This grow-a-long is inspired by their project.

Why these charities?
These charities were chosen as they are grassroots organisations that work with very little overheads, helping some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people in society.

AKWAABA is a volunteer led social group for migrants and refugees in East London. They provide a safe space and support to people of all backgrounds including asylum seekers and people who are homeless. They are a fantastic "grass roots" organisation that not only support people, but empower them to become leaders in the community.

WOLVERHAMPTON CITY OF SANCTUARY is volunteer led group in Wolverhampton. They help people with advice and support including people who are destitute. They also run a range of local events and activities. They are part of the national City of Sanctuary network who runs many great projects including the "Gardens of Sanctuary" project (cityofsanctuary.org/group-activities/gardens-of-sanctuary/)

AEGEAN SOLIDARITY NETWORK provides vital aid to refugees in Greece. They also run a range of projects, including arts events for children, and are partnered with Sussex Prairie Gardens

Thank you for checking out my page. Making a donation is fast, easy and secure thanks to Give as you Live Donate. They'll take your donation and pass it onto Wolverhampton City Of Sanctuary, Akwaaba and Aegean Solidarity Network Team Uk.
