My 30th Birthday Half Marathon!

Joe Williams is raising money for MindOut LGBTQ Mental Health Service

My story

The Brighton half marathon this year falls on my 30th birthday.

To make it to 30 as a trans person is something of a revolution. For a very long time, the average life expectancy of a trans person was 35, and a huge part of this is suicide.

I am the luckiest person I know. After 28 years of crippling gender-related mental health issues, I began my transition to save my own life. It worked. I can look into mirror. My mind is clear, my heart is open.

Now for the first time, I can walk down a road with my head help high, knowing that I can be seen for who I really am. So when I saw the marathon fell on my birthday, and that MindOut were asking for people to rise to the challenge and fundraise for them, it seemed like kismet.

The work MindOut is doing saves lives. If I hadn't had the incredible support network I do, there is a very high chance I wouldn't have survived my own battles with mental health. Without the help of my loved ones, and mental health services I believe I would be dead.

Now I'm going to use my trans body to help save others.

I am NOT a runner.

Last year I did a 5k, and I haven't run since. This is a HUGE challenge for me. I'm changing my habits, my lifestyle and pushing harder than I have for anything else except my transition, because this matters to me. Doing something stupidly difficult (seriously, running 13 miles is really not my idea of fun) to raise money and awareness for my community - to try and make a world where future generations don't have to suffer like I did for nearly 30 years - matters to me.

I'm not asking much, if you only have 50p to give then amazing! If you have 50p to give per mile I run, then amazing (thats £6.50 in total) If you have £1 to give per mile (£13), than amazing! It's cheesy as hell but honestly, every little helps.

Trans bodies belong everywhere.
