Running for LGBTQ+ Mental Health

Lydia Heath is raising money for MindOut LGBTQ Mental Health Service

My story

EVENT RESCHEDULED TO 10TH OCTOBER 2021

I'm running the 2021 Brighton Half Marathon in June, raising money for MindOut and raising awareness of LGBTQ+ mental health. MindOut is a mental health service run by and for lesbians, gay, bisexual, trans and queer people with experience of mental health issues. They work to improve the mental health and wellbeing of LGBTQ communities and to make mental health a community concern.

I've struggled with my mental health all my life and it's only really in the past few years that I have started to make the connection between this and my sexuality. I knew I was attracted to women when I was a teenager but always felt deeply ashamed about this and it was only in my early thirties that I was able to accept this part of myself. Decades of hiding from myself (and others) had a significant impact on my well being - I've battled with self harm, eating disorders, attempted suicide and long periods of severe depression and anxiety. Thanks to the support of friends and family I finally felt able to come out, but there has been a lot to unpack and my journey is ongoing.

MindOut helped me process some of the shame and internalised homophobia I've carried around for years. Through their counselling service I had the time and support I needed to explore aspects of my sexuality and gender presentation, which has helped me begin to heal and find the self love and acceptance I wish I'd had as a confused teenager. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted and I'm happier now than I ever thought I could be.

MindOut have helped and continue to help thousands of people from all walks of life who, like me, have mental health issues because of how society treats their sexuality and/or gender identities. Their work is so important and running this half marathon is my tiny way of giving back to them and raising awareness of LGBTQ+ mental health. Breaking the stigma around mental health in general and empowering LGBTQ+ people to live joyous, fulfilling lives is something I am passionately committed to.

Please help me reach my fundraising target by giving whatever you can and spreading the word amongst your friends & family. This is my first half marathon and my goal is to complete it within 2 hours. Thank you for your support!
