Russell Whyte is raising money for Pitt Hopkins UK
This is my niece Lexie. Lexie is 5 years old and has Pitt-Hopkins Syndrome (PTHS).
PTHS is an ultra-rare genetic condition that affects a child’s development and causes moderate to severe learning disabilities. Prevalence is estimated at one in 225,000 to 300,000 with only about 300 cases in the UK. Someone with PTHS typically: has problems with their learning and development, such as starting to roll, sit or crawl, develops little or no speech, has distinctive facial features, such as a wide nose and Cupid’s bow in the upper lip, can develop changes in their breathing, may develop seizures or may have digestive problems particularly constipation.
It was obvious from birth that not everything was as it should be with Lexie. After her 1st birthday she received the support of various health professionals with her care. And shortly before she was 3 the cause of her global developmental delay was identified as PTHS following genetic testing. Lexie is currently non-verbal and working very hard on her walking. Her favourite things to do include sand and water play, listening to stories and nursery rhymes and watching her favourite programme, In The Night Garden. Lexie is due to start Primary School after the summer where she will join the Additional Support Needs (ASN) Unit. With the help of her wonderful teachers Lexie will continue on her own unique journey through life, being as happy and fulfilled as she can be. Lexie is a gorgeous little girl with an infectious smile and she brings so much joy to her family, her nursery/school peers and all those involved in her care.
