Tim Adlam and Rachel Cunliffe are raising money for Stepping Stones-District Specialist Centre For Children With Special Needs, Designability and MULTIPLE SYSTEM ATROPHY TRUST
Tim and his sister Rachel spent their early childhood on the South Downs. Tim grew up to become an engineer and clinical scientist, leading teaching, design, and research. He finds working with people to develop assistive technology very rewarding.
In 2024 Tim was diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy - a degenerative condition that affects movement, balance, speech and other body functions like controlling blood pressure, continence, swallowing and breathing. There are no cures or treatments and this condition will significantly shorten Tim’s life. His ‘bucket list’ includes a long distance challenge walk and the South Downs Way is the perfect opportunity to spend time with family and friends in a place of many memories, while raising money for causes close to his heart. Tim has already lost much of his mobility so will be tackling the trek with his Tramper - an off-road mobility scooter.
Along with his sister and assorted family and friends he will be travelling the 100-mile footpath from Winchester to Eastbourne in July. He hopes to raise money in aid of three charities:

Hello everyone! 2️⃣3️⃣ days to go… 🥾This week’s update has a few words from Tim:
Why did you want to do this walk?
“I want to do this walk because I have always wanted to do a long walk, the South Downs National Park is a beautiful place and I have many good memories of being there from when I was growing up as a young child and visiting family in the years beyond. I also care about the charities we are fundraising for – Designability, Stepping Stones, and the MSA Trust. Each of them is doing good work to support the lives of disabled people, and I have a personal connection to each of them.”
What are you looking forward to the most on this walk?
“I am looking forward to days in the sunshine on the top of the hill in beautiful countryside driving a Tramper. I have learned that in many things in life big things are done by settling into a rhythm and keeping going. The rhythm of a meaningful long journey with friends and family is a beautiful thing which I am looking forward to very much.”
We are looking forward to sharing the trip with you… you can find our Facebook page at Tim’s Terrific Tramper Trip. Once we start walking we hope to bring you some live streams … so keep us bookmarked!
This week’s update takes a closer look at the MSA Trust.
As a charity they strive to provide free services for people with MSA, carers, friends and family members - in fact, anybody whose life is affected by Multiple System Atrophy.
This includes a diverse range of things including specialist nurses, voice banking to enable those with MSA to continue communicating even after their speech is gone, social welfare support, and in person and digital support groups; not to mention funding vital scientific research into this rare condition.
MSA is a degenerative (gets worse) neurological (brain and nerves) condition affecting 4 to 5 adults in every 100 000 people. It slowly removes people’s ability to move, balance, speak, and control other body functions such as bladder and blood pressure. It leads to premature death, usually around 6-9 years from when the symptoms started.
Tim was diagnosed with MSA less than a year ago, and already the kindness and support of MSA Trust nurses has been reassuring and helpful. They are reliant entirely on donations, so our fundraising - and your giving - will help to ensure they can continue to support people like Tim and his family. (The picture is Tim at home in his new wheelchair)
As always, we are grateful for your donations. Please do share our page if you can. Thank you!
Dear friends, you are amazing! This weekend we crossed the £1000.00 mark - thank you so much for your generosity. It is very moving to see so many of you support us, and our excitement and anticipation are building as we near our start date for Tim’s Terrific Tramper Trip 🥾😀💕. Looking forward to making you all proud… Rachel xx
Only five weeks till we start walking🥾.
This week’s update focuses on Stepping Stones District Specialist Centre where Tim is a trustee. This charity is based in West Wiltshire where they help pre-school children with special needs. They focus on helping children presenting with delayed development to access timely therapy and support so they can make progress.
Children who go to Stepping Stones are assessed and helped and encouraged to learn through play, as well as given the opportunity to meet health professionals like speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.
Tim and his family have first hand experience of their valuable support, and now Tim is one of their trustees; I’m not sure you could give a finer endorsement of such a great team!
We are happy and proud to be raising money in aid of the awesome work they undertake.
Six weeks to go! 🥾The next few updates will focus on the charities we are supporting: this week I’m looking at Designability. Tim worked for them for many years. They change the lives
of disabled adults and children across the UK..
Three-year-old Isaac has cerebral palsy and is unable to walk. His mum Laura told Designability that, although he can’t physically move around, he’s bright and he’s desperate to be mobile.
When Isaac got his free Wizzybug powered wheelchair from Designability, his world opened up and he was able to explore and play. Laura said:
“He can now experience the world like his sister does; Wizzybug helps him to feel like other children his age while he’s using it. I’m so grateful for Designability. Wizzybug has given Isaac a much better quality of life.”
Designability has provided Wizzybug to more than 1,000 children all over the UK so far. Without any government funding, they rely on donations from people like you - so thank you for your support!
