2026-2027 New Cohort Parental Giving Scheme (Y7)
Raising for The Crypt School
We are delighted to welcome you and your child to The Crypt School community.
At Crypt, we pride ourselves on being a welcoming, inclusive, and ambitious school. Our goal is to help all students thrive in their pursuits during their time with us and, through the education, support, and care we provide, as they transition into adulthood. As a high-performing school, it is expected that we offer exceptional facilities and activities beyond the academic curriculum. Personal development of students is an integral part of an education here. While we have a strong reputation for academic excellence, outstanding results are not only achieved through young people gaining top grades, but through the individual and personal progress that every student makes during their time at the School.
You may, therefore, be surprised to hear that we operate under considerable budgetary restrictions. The idea that selective state grammar schools receive significantly more public funding per pupil than non-selective state schools is a misconception. Indeed, we often receive less in basic per-pupil funding than non-selective schools, which creates a substantial funding gap.
Over the past few years, voluntary parental financial contributions made via the Parental Giving Scheme (PGS) to the school have been a vital lifeline, enabling us to maintain a wide range of rich and diverse curricular and extracurricular activities, without which the quality of school life would be significantly impacted. Ongoing parental contributions have helped to fund extra-curricular clubs, enrichment activities, and enhanced sports provision, for example, supporting a cross-section of departments and students. Next year, we will rely on the Parental Giving Scheme to fund activities that will benefit every child across the school - including your own.
This support makes a significant difference to the experiences your child will have access to.
We know these are challenging times for household finances, and we greatly appreciate and acknowledge the financial and in-kind support that so many of our Crypt families make to the school every year, contributing to the educational experience we offer your children.
Please consider setting up a monthly or quarterly standing order to ensure we can continue to provide the excellent academic and diverse co-curricular programmes currently on offer at the school.
This can be set up through this platform.
In addition, we would urge you to sign up for the Give As You Live Online shopping app, which builds a regular income for the school, without you having to spend a penny.
If you would like to discuss other ways to make a financial contribution, such as corporate or legacy giving, or sponsorship opportunities, please email sveal@crypt.gloucs.sch.uk. Please also remember that by completing the Gift Aid declaration, your contribution is increased by 25% at no extra cost.
Thank you.

About us
The Crypt School
Founded in 1539, The Crypt School is one of the oldest schools in the country. Now on its fourth site at Podsmead, the school’s work and ethos are still informed by the vision of its founders, John and Joan Cooke: to provide a free, grammar school education to bright children, regardless of their background.
The school's last two OFSTED ratings have been OUTSTANDING, with the 2024 report stating: "Pupils receive an exceptional quality of education and benefit from a rich offer to develop their talents and interests. They consistently meet the school’s high expectations for their academic achievement and broader development. The school motto is, ‘flourish Cryptians,’ and pupils do."
The reality, however, is that despite its continuing success, The Crypt is not, and never has been, a wealthy school, and we are frequently vulnerable to fluctuations in government funding. Despite being an outstanding school and offering an education that outperforms many neighbouring schools, both state and independent, we operate under significant budgetary restrictions.
Over the past decade, there have been significant improvements to the school estate. However, there is still much work ahead. We are committed to our ambitious plans for further estate developments to establish an environment that sets the standard for 21st-century teaching, learning and student personal development and wellbeing.
