Raising for Quaker Congo Partnership UK
Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo: ESTABLISH A SMALL BUILDING FOR WOMEN’S SOAP-MAKING, SEWING & TAILORING, AND AGRICULTURE GROUPS.
Action for Women’s Integrated Development (AWID)
The Quaker Congo Partnership UK (QCP) needs £3,000 to directly support the work of very disadvantaged women in the villages of Abeka and Kikongo, in Eastern DRC. For 12 years we have provided small grants for basic tools and equipment to get AWID groups started. They work in one of the poorest places on the planet, facing extreme poverty, active armed groups, physical and sexual violence, and widespread cholera and malaria.
Groups of women grow vegetables, make juice and breed a few goats. Highly skilled women make beautiful garments in tiny huts, and actively train young women apprentices on treadle machines, without electricity. Others produce and sell homemade soap using caustic soda, in cramped huts, with small children present.
The produce and the crafts are sold or used at home, providing their families with resources and a small, life-saving income. The AWID women’s groups urgently need one simple premises to bring together their activities: safe soap-making, sewing and tailoring workshops, juice-making, and vegetable preparation for market.
The local women have drawn up a concrete plan to procure a parcel of land with a hut on it and can start work immediately. This is realistically rooted in their local economy. They are skilled, resilient and enthusiastic.
We need £3,000 to complete this project.
Any contribution to the £3,000 they need would be gratefully received.
Every penny goes to this project. Quaker Congo Partnership is run totally on a voluntary, unpaid basis.
Even a small donation really will make a huge difference. Thank you.
