Such an important organisation for the local community and beyond! It’s vital that the Blue Elephant be kept open.

About us

Set in the heart of a South London estate, in an area of high deprivation, BET exists to provide artistic opportunity to those who would not ordinarily benefit. This ethos is carried through our professional programme and our participation activities, which we value equally.

The participation department delivers an eclectic mix of projects across ages, in schools, community settings and in our own building. They meet the ever-changing need of the local community - we listen to our participants (our neighbours) and respond by creating opportunities that they want to see. Because we prioritise listening and responding, we are celebrated as being an agile and flexible organisation. At the core of all our projects is a focus on mental health and well-being. Staff are trained as mental health first aiders and a trauma informed approach is taken in all the work that we deliver. This means we are often trusted to undertake work to support complex issues.

Help Blue Elephant Theatre stay open

Help us continue our vital work with vulnerable young people and emerging artists!

Blue Elephant Theatre has been a creative outlet, safe space and supportive pastoral network for vulnerable young people in Camberwell, and has provided unique opportunities to emerging artists starting out in the industry.

With our main funders changing their remit and Arts Council England not renewing our NPO status, we are having to run without any core funding whatsoever. This is putting our vital community work at risk, with a very real risk of imminent closure.

We need your help to keep our activities going until further funding is available. Even the smallest sum will help!

Our participation activities are a necessary service, widely celebrated in our local area.

Our youth theatre programme is the best example of our profound effect on the lives of young people. It has been hugely successful at making a positive impact on young people's mental health and wellbeing locally for 12 years, providing participants with necessary respite in the face of intersectional inequality and limited access to the arts.

Watch the video below and get a glimpse of the transformative and joyful nature of our youth theatre.
