Clare’s Kilimanjaro Challenge for Carers in Hertfordshire

Clare successfully completed her Kilimanjaro climb on 11 September 2026, reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak on 10 September via the Lemosho route.

The eight‑day trek took her through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and finally the Arctic summit zone. Kilimanjaro is a mountain of contrasts — scorching sun by day, freezing winds by night, and altitude that makes even simple tasks feel demanding. The climb included crossing the vast Shira Plateau, tackling the famous Barranco Wall, and enduring the long, bitterly cold overnight ascent to the summit. Clare described the climb as the toughest challenge she has ever completed, but also the most meaningful.

Summit night in particular pushed Clare to her limits: climbing in darkness, battling thin air, and facing intense cold that left her fingers numb despite multiple layers of gloves. Nerve pain then started to kick in so to warm them, she made the decision to put her poles away and climb the upper section armless, crossing her hands inside her jacket over her chest and relying entirely on balance and determination. It was her most challenging moment — and the one that proved her resilience.. The cause — and the carers and donors she was climbing for — kept her moving.

Clare carried the Carers in Hertfordshire banner throughout the climb to raise awareness of unpaid carers and the vital support the charity provides. She is incredibly grateful for the encouragement and generosity shown so far. The fundraiser exceeded its target in the first weeks, with donations continuing to come in now post‑expedition.

This challenge was completed in honour of all unpaid carers — the people who give their time, energy and love every day, often without recognition. Clare’s goal was to shine a light on their strength and ensure more carers can access the support they deserve.
