Raising for The Crypt School
Event dates: –
At The Crypt School, we believe that every young person has creative potential. What determines whether potential flourishes is not talent alone, but opportunity. When students are given the space to create, the tools to explore, and the confidence to express themselves, extraordinary things happen.
For generations, The Crypt School has championed excellence in the arts. Today, however, our facilities no longer match the talent, ambition, and aspirations of our students.
That is why we are creating a landmark Creative & Performing Arts Centre—a transformative new home for drama, music, performance and creative expression in all its forms. More than a building, it will be a place where confidence is built, talents are discovered, and futures are shaped. It will serve not only our students, but also our local community and the wider city.
Skills developed through the arts—confidence, communication, resilience, collaboration, and innovation—are the very qualities young people need to thrive in life, learning, and work. Creative and performing arts education strengthens mental well-being, nurtures leadership and problem-solving, and helps young people build meaningful connections with others.
For many students, creative spaces are where they first discover their voice, their confidence, and their sense of belonging. These experiences are often life-changing.
Yet at the very moment these skills are becoming more important, access to high-quality creative education is diminishing. Funding pressures and reduced provision lead to declining participation. Opportunities to participate are increasingly determined by circumstance rather than potential. Without action, the gap between those who can access the arts and those who cannot will continue to grow.
Help us create a place where talent is nurtured, confidence takes root, and every young person can discover the extraordinary potential within themselves. Thank you.
Founded in 1539, The Crypt School is one of the oldest schools in the country. Now on its fourth site at Podsmead, the school’s work and ethos are still informed by the vision of its founders, John and Joan Cooke: to provide a free, grammar school education to bright children, regardless of their background.
The school's last two OFSTED ratings have been OUTSTANDING, with the 2024 report stating: "Pupils receive an exceptional quality of education and benefit from a rich offer to develop their talents and interests. They consistently meet the school’s high expectations for their academic achievement and broader development. The school motto is, ‘flourish Cryptians,’ and pupils do."
The reality, however, is that despite its continuing success, The Crypt is not, and never has been, a wealthy school, and we are frequently vulnerable to fluctuations in government funding. Despite being an outstanding school and offering an education that outperforms many neighbouring schools, both state and independent, we operate under significant budgetary restrictions.
Over the past decade, there have been significant improvements to the school estate. However, there is still much work ahead. We are committed to our ambitious plans for further estate developments to establish an environment that sets the standard for 21st-century teaching, learning and student personal development and wellbeing.
