Dorset Chalkstream Salmon Restoration Project
Raising for Westcountry Rivers Trust
An ambitious five-year plan to help the Frome salmon recover.
-
Egg enhancement – experimentally growing smolts to adulthood to produce fertilised eggs for planting into the river, potentially doubling the number of fertile eggs in the Frome.
-
Habitat protection – fencing to protect river weed from swan grazing near salmon spawning sites, based on GWCT research showing a 400% increase in fry numbers where weed cover is present.
-
Smolt survival – an innovative ‘smolt shuttle bus’ trial to transport tagged smolts past Poole Harbour, where research shows mortality rates are significantly higher than elsewhere.
-
Barrier removal – continued work to open the remaining barriers to salmon migration in the catchment.

About us
Westcountry Rivers Trust
Charity number: 1135007
We are bringing Westcountry rivers to life.
We do so by restoring and protecting the water environments of the region to benefit all who rely on them, while also supporting long-term water resilience.
Our work helps nature and people. The natural world we live in sustains us all as we live our lives and it is vital we take steps to care for it in return. Through catchment-wide ecosystem projects to grassroot community events, our vision is to see healthy Westcountry freshwater environments and river habitats teeming with life.
