This year the Sheffield Palestine Women’s Scholarship Fund’ celebrates its 20th anniversary. We started the Fund in 2006 and our first students were recruited in 2007. Since then we have supported many amazing young women, at first in Gaza and then also in the West Bank, to gain a university education.
To mark our 20th anniversary year, the Scholarship Fund has launched The Ethel Challenge. “Ethels” are the ninety-five hills across the Peak District—most of them over 400 metres—that that have been named after the environmentalist and campaigner Ethel Haythornthwaite, who helped set up the Peak District National Park in 1951.
The Challenge is to “bag” an Ethel or two. Why? Because by reaching the top of an Ethel, and raising the Palestinian flag, we can honour the extraordinary resilience, determination and achievement of our students—both past and present. And we can honour those who fought, and still fight, for the right to roam here in the Peak District. And each Ethel bagged will be an act of solidarity with Palestinians, struggling for the right to roam freely in their own land.
