Raising for Islington Boat Club
For many years, PeggotyTom IV has been much more than a narrowboat. She is a valued community asset, bringing people together and providing opportunities for relaxation, learning, connection and wellbeing on London’s waterways.
The benefits of spending time on the water are well recognised. Being afloat can reduce stress, improve mental wellbeing, encourage social interaction and provide a peaceful escape from the pressures of everyday life. For many of our passengers, a trip aboard PeggotyTom IV is not simply a day out — it is a chance to reconnect with nature, family, friends and the wider community.
Throughout the year, PeggotyTom IV supports a wide range of activities, including family trips, wellbeing cruises, community outings and special events. Many of these trips are offered free of charge or at heavily reduced rates, ensuring that people who might otherwise be unable to access such experiences can enjoy the unique benefits of being on the water.
Thanks to careful maintenance, PeggotyTom IV remains sound in body. However, after many years of faithful service, her heart — the engine — is now showing significant signs of wear and tear. With a limited budget and increasing maintenance demands, we believe the time has come to replace it with a completely new engine.
A new engine will ensure that PeggotyTom IV can continue to provide safe, reliable and accessible trips for the thousands of people who benefit from her each year. Without this investment, the future of these valuable community activities could be at risk.
PeggotyTom IV is a community asset, and now she needs the community’s help. We cannot do this alone. Every donation, no matter how small, will make a real difference and will be carefully used to help secure her future.
With your support, we can keep PeggotyTom IV cruising, creating memories, supporting wellbeing, and bringing people together on the water for many years to come. Thank you.

Essentially a youth club, but offering activities to all ages, we are based in an oasis of calm and secure water amidst towering city buildings and social housing, Islington Boat Club has been offering watersports based activities for 56 years. We have seen over half a million children through our gates and hope to see millions more. Started in 1970 by local activist Crystal Hale, IBC has developed from a small youth club into a cross generational, fully inclusive community gem.
One thing remains true for Islington Boat Club (IBC), we want to continue our mission - To inspire learning, improve health, promote socialisation and strengthen the Islington community by providing a wide range of safe and affordable water-based activities for everyone – with a focus on young people, the over-50s and people with disabilities. Our full history can be found on our website.
