We are raising £25,000 to support our efforts as a music department which is at the beating heart of cultural life of the school and to purchase a new grand piano.
As a Lead School with the GSW Music Hub, we are recognised as being outstanding providers of education and have been fortunate to host wonderful experiences including the choir tour to Belgium, singing the Faure Requiem in our Spring Concert and re-establishing the musical theatre scene with our award-nominated production of Oliver! We have accessed opportunities with the Gabrieli Roar project, Carducci String Quartet, The Sixteen and an upcoming choral workshop with Joanna Forbes L'Estrange.
We offer a vibrant and inclusive KS3 curriculum which nurtures and supports musical development with a diverse range of styles.
The uptake for music education at the Crypt has never been higher with over 300 students receiving instrumental tuition. We are proud of everything that we have achieved despite our small and cramped facilities.
Each concert we hold carries a substantial cost in hiring musicians and securing relevant materials for performance.
Our Bluthner grand piano which has been a staple of many school concerts in the main hall is now in a tired condition and requires extensive reconditioning beyond its value. Our advanced players who are looking to study music as a profession are unable to access a suitable instrument to best develop their skills. Your funding will help to support the growth of our piano students through the purchase of a new piano and influence a new generation of pupils to take up instrumental tuition.
We have been fortunate to receive two pledges totalling £1800 but need your help to reach our target.
Music is at the beating heart of The Crypt School and we aim to inspire and enthuse all students to become creative musicians, with your support helping to continue providing successful events and opportunities.

Our updates
WE DID IT - and managed to secure the best piano for £18,000.
Last Friday (3rd July) was a very special day for the Crypt School Music Department as we officially welcomed our brand-new Yamaha concert-grade grand piano! 🎶
This incredible instrument is here thanks to the amazing generosity of everyone who supported our recent Pianothon fundraising campaign. Every performance, every donation, and every pound helped turn this ambition into reality.
Seeing students eagerly awaiting a chance to play it has been the best part. Their excitement is exactly why we set out on this journey. This piano isn't just a new instrument—it's an investment in future musicians, allowing students to develop their talent, grow in confidence, and create music for years to come.
A huge thank you to everyone who donated, encouraged us, watched the Pianothon, or helped behind the scenes. You have made a lasting difference to music at The Crypt School. Here's to many years of performances, practice sessions, concerts, and unforgettable musical moments. 🎼✨
Founded in 1539, The Crypt School is one of the oldest schools in the country. Now on its fourth site at Podsmead, the school’s work and ethos are still informed by the vision of its founders, John and Joan Cooke: to provide a free, grammar school education to bright children, regardless of their background.
The school's last two OFSTED ratings have been OUTSTANDING, with the 2024 report stating: "Pupils receive an exceptional quality of education and benefit from a rich offer to develop their talents and interests. They consistently meet the school’s high expectations for their academic achievement and broader development. The school motto is, ‘flourish Cryptians,’ and pupils do."
The reality, however, is that despite its continuing success, The Crypt is not, and never has been, a wealthy school, and we are frequently vulnerable to fluctuations in government funding. Despite being an outstanding school and offering an education that outperforms many neighbouring schools, both state and independent, we operate under significant budgetary restrictions.
Over the past decade, there have been significant improvements to the school estate. However, there is still much work ahead. We are committed to our ambitious plans for further estate developments to establish an environment that sets the standard for 21st-century teaching, learning and student personal development and wellbeing.
