Kingston to Palermo - Sponsored Cycle Ride in aid of Reading Force

Raising for Reading Force

Event dates:

Five years ago the charity Reading Force organised a sponsored bike ride from Lands End to John O'Groats.

This time we are going further - and our intrepid cyclist, Neil Baverstock (husband of our Reading Force founder Alison), joined by others on various stages of the journey, will cycle from Kingston-upon-Thames to Palermo in Sicily - birthplace of their most recent daughter-in-law.

All proceeds from fundraising will go towards the work of the charity (expedition costs are being covered by the cyclists/supporters). You can support our work by kindly donating through this page.

To make matters more interesting, we invite you to submit your bid (by the end of September 2026) for how many miles will be covered on the journey. Send your estimate to alison@readingforce.org.uk along with your email address. The closest estimate will receive a poster copy of what Alison considers the world's most beautiful painting, which is housed in Palermo. (The Annunciate by Antonella da Messina c.1476, to be found in the Galleria Abatellis).

You will be able to follow the progress of Neil and friends on Strava where you will be able to see what he has done each day, including the route, daily mileage and other stats about the day’s ride.  He will also be posting comments about that day and uploading photos (some of which Reading Force colleagues will upload on social media).

Reading Force supports the military community by organising shared-reading initiatives to keep Forces families connected. Founded in 2011 we know that those who take part feel more in touch and enjoy fun activities that promote well being and positive mental health.  Find out more about what we do - including two short films that show the project in action - at readingforce.org.uk

About us

Reading Force

Charity number: 1159890

Please help us support British Forces families and children by donating to Reading Force. All the challenges faced by military families are often underestimated; frequent moves of home and school, children having to say goodbye to friends and extended family, and the emotional strain of having a parent working in a war zone.

Reading Force brings Forces families closer together through shared reading. It’s like a book club for the whole family and a way to learn and bond. It is available free to ALL British military families, Army, Navy & Marines, and RAF, including Reservists and veterans.

Reading Force encourages families to read a book together, at home with each other, or while a loved one is deployed or away on training. If separated, the book can be read and chatted about via video calls. The whole family can get involved, as well as friends.

As well as a free book, Reading Force also gives families a scrapbook to fill with thoughts, photographs and drawings about the story they’re sharing, and they can enter it into our scrapbook competition. Talking about books and stories connects families who are separated, as well as providing bonding time when together at home - this supports wellbeing, builds resilience, and creates shared memories.

“The idea of Reading Force is a simple one – to build a bridge of books between absent parents and the children they’ve left behind; to offer a point of contact, a shared experience, something to talk and laugh about together, an intimate experience that dissolves distance.” - Meg Rosoff, Carnegie Medal winning children’s author

Your donation will enable us to send military children free books and special scrapbooks or teen journals, to help keep them stay close during deployments and to give continuity during challenging times.
