Our young people need to be inspired and this will open their eyes to another world.

About us

'Motivating Young People Through Sailing'
The Island Trust helps young people with disabilities, learning difficulties, and those suffering deprivation to take part in exciting adventure voyages on board our fleet of traditional sailing boats.
Through the challenge of learning to sail we provide disadvantaged young people with the opportunity to develop their capabilities and life-skills. We coach the teamwork and communication skills necessary to lead a fun, healthy and independent life. Vocational training offered on board can contribute to long-term employment prospects. Our young sailors return to their communities with an altered outlook on life, increased motivation and a fresh perspective on their self-worth and abilities. For many who sail with us, this outdoor experience could be the first time they have stayed away from home, left the inner city or community where they live.

Life on the Ocean Wave

Event dates: Monday 16th October 2023 – Friday 20th October 2023

Between Monday 16th and Friday 20th October 2023 we, The Island Trust, will be working with Widening Horizons, an innovative programme developed by the Millfields Trust through their ‘Millfields Inspired’ programme. The programme supports and enables students to understand the importance of education and how this can influence their life outside of the school.

Stonehouse has the highest deprivation score in Plymouth. The ‘Millfields Inspired’ programme is delivered to the seven local primary schools located within the neighbourhood. Unemployment here is so high that the children have few role models to encourage them into work. Widening Horizons seeks to inspire year 5 children on visits to workplaces.

During the week we will use our two larger boats, Johanna Lucretia and Pegasus, to introduce the children to marine life, maritime activities and heritage, where they can see, hear, and touch and explore the world around them. About 30 students will attend each day, split into four groups moving between four sessions in the two boats. These days complement visits Widening Horizons may arrange to Mayflower Marina.

To date we have raised just over 50% of our target. Can you help cover the full cost of running this week with a donation? Whether great or small, your donation will help us to raise the much needed funds to give these deserving young people an awe-inspiring glimpse into the world around them, enhancing their future prospects.
