Nepal’s floods aren’t over yet: keep our Trisuli flood appeal going as the worst monsoon in 33 years sweeps away more bridges and roads

Flash floods in Nepal may have dropped out of the headlines, but they haven’t gone away. The most recent struck on Sunday 11th October, on the Burigandaki. Nepal is enduring its most destructive monsoon in 33 years, with four rivers now seeing further flash floods. Bridges have been washed away, and landslides have cut across every main road in the Western region.

The scale of it is overwhelming, and donor fatigue is understandable. But it’s more important than ever that we keep going, so that when this nightmare is over, we can help more communities build the resilience they need.

The heartbreaking stories coming out of Nepal following the recent floods have been inescapable. What they don't show is the extent of the disaster downstream, or that damage to roads and bridges has cut communities off from aid. We are in touch with colleagues on the ground working alongside the army and police, and we can send funds for immediate use where needed. The greatest challenge is what happens next: once the images disappear from our screens, the donations will dry up; recovery is when our help is essential, and people’s donations will make a meaningful difference. Using our experience and intimate knowledge of the area, we will be concentrating our efforts on community recovery. Working directly with local government and the villagers themselves, we can be certain that every pound donated goes straight to where it’s needed. We want to thank everyone who has donated to YYY Foundation over the past few weeks. It’s been a challenge, and with your help, we have been able to help an isolated school that survived the flood but was cut off when the road and bridge were washed away. A single teacher has been caring for 100 children aged 3 to 10. More than half of them lost both parents in the flood. The army airlifted food to them. After a hair-raising multi-day trip and a tow from a JCB, Maya and the team in Kathmandu got through with a field kitchen, sanitary products, clothes, classroom items, games, and sports equipment for the school. We have also supported surviving women and girls from a nearby secondary school, where 200 children and 4 teachers were killed in the flood. YYY Foundation has given 150 sets of zero-waste, washable period kits and sanitary products to female survivors, along with traditional clothing for older women.
So far, we have raised over £7,500 - thank you from us and the children at the schools. We are keeping the campaign open and running alongside our normal fundraising because we are going to have a big and difficult job on our hands once we can start helping with long-term recovery. Every penny we can raise now will make a big difference to how much we are able to do in the spring.
