Raising for Pett Level Independent Rescue Boat
Pett Level Independent Rescue Boat (PLIRB) is raising funds for the future purchase of a replacement lifeboat.
Our John Pulfer Rescue Boat, a 5.4metre Zodiac MilPro, has lasted for 12 years, but will reach the end of her serviceable life in 2027.
We are now doing all we can to raise the required funds to be able to purchase a new lifeboat that will future-proof our service for the next 20 years.
Our new boat will need to be the optimum size to be able to respond to the taskings we receive. This means it needs to be agile to navigate under the cliffs and close to shore - but also have the strength and power to tow stricken vessels.
It will need to be equipped with state-of-the-art navigation, communication and safety equipment to ensure our crew are always protected at sea.
The estimated cost of a fully equipped lifeboat will be around £150,000. This is incredibly expensive - but we are planning on purchasing a boat with an aluminium hull which will have a far longer life than our current boat which has a GRP hull (plastic and fibre glass).

We are an independent lifeboat based in Pett Level, East Sussex, serving the community between Camber and Hastings. With a 55-year history, our mission is the preservation of life at sea and on inland waters. We train, operate and launch for service in exactly the same way as the RNLI but, like all independent lifeboats, we are entirely self-funded and self-managed.
We operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and everyone is a volunteer.
We are tasked by UK Coastguard and work in cooperation with local RNLI stations and all other emergency services. We are tasked 30+ times a year, in addition to local calls for first aid and other community services. We often cover for our neighbouring RNLI stations in Rye and Hastings when they do not have the personnel to respond to taskings.
We operate two rescue boats, a 5.4 metre Zodiac MilPro RIB and a 3.4 metre Arancia Surf RIB. These assets allow us to get in close to the cliffs – essential for our area.
Our taskings range from towing casualty vessels, locating and rescuing casualties on the cliffs or cut off by the tide, searching for missing children or vulnerable people and many other types of incidents.
