Year 6 at Birchwood – Fundraising for Dreamflight (with a Marathon Finish!)

Hi, I’m Pippa Wake, Headteacher of Birchwood Primary School, and I’m taking on the London Marathon 2026 in celebration of one of our pupils, Edward, who was selected for this year’s Dreamflight trip.

Edward was first diagnosed with a brain tumour at just 3 years old. Since then, he’s faced years of intensive treatment – including chemotherapy, proton beam therapy in Germany, and ongoing challenges from hydrocephalus and hearing loss. Through it all, Edward has shown incredible resilience and determination.

Dreamflight is a charity that takes children with serious illnesses or disabilities on the holiday of a lifetime to Orlando, Florida. It’s not just a trip – it’s a chance for children to build confidence, independence, and lifelong memories.

Edward has just returned from his Dreamflight adventure and had the most wonderful time!
He’s shared his experiences with his class, and the excitement has spread throughout the school. Seeing the joy this trip brought to Edward has inspired us to do even more.

Year 6 Leading the Way

Inspired by Edward’s story, Year 6 at Birchwood Primary are taking on a year of fundraising for Dreamflight. Their first event will be a Silly Santa Run around the local area in the last week of term – and that’s just the beginning! Throughout the school year, they’ll organise fun activities to raise funds, culminating in me running the London Marathon in April 2026.

🎯Our Goal

Our fundraising target is £3000. Every penny raised will go directly to Dreamflight, helping to fund future trips and give more children the chance to take part in this life-changing experience.

Whether it’s spare change from behind the sofa, a donation from a local business, or support from our school community -  it all adds up and makes a real difference.
