Sign Language Week

Raising for Gloucestershire Deaf Association

Event dates:

Sign Language Week – More Than Words

This week is Sign Language Week, a time to celebrate British Sign Language (BSL) — not just as a language, but as a culture, a community, and a lifeline to connection.
For Deaf people, sign language isn’t an “extra” or a novelty.
It’s how relationships are built.
It’s how jokes land.
It’s how stories are shared.
It’s how identity is formed and belonging is felt.
Too often, signing is only noticed when it’s missing — when access breaks down, when Deaf people are left on the outside of conversations, or when inclusion feels like a special moment rather than the norm.
Sign Language Week invites us to pause and ask better questions:

  • Why isn’t signed communication built in from the start?
  • Why does access still depend on awareness instead of expectation?
  • What would change if we treated BSL as a standard, not a surprise?

Learning even a little sign language can open doors.
Valuing it properly can change lives.
This week isn’t about perfection.
It’s about intention.
It’s about recognising that communication is shared responsibility — and that inclusion begins long before someone has to ask for it.
Let’s celebrate sign language.
Let’s respect the community it belongs to.
And let’s commit to a world where being understood is not the exception, but the standard.
