Raising for Babons Cancer Support
Stella was diagnosed in October 2025 with Breast Cancer and after 3 operations to remove the invasive lobular cancer, and areas of ductal carcinoma in situ, she had radiotherapy and is now taking hormone blockers for the next 5 years.
Stella received support from nurses at Breast Cancer Now who explained the treatment options and sent her all the information booklets about her Cancer and the treatment process.
Breast Cancer Now are a national charity who support patients over the phone and through their leaflets. They have raised over £315 million to date and continue to raise funds to support research for a Breast Cancer cure. They are "funding over 90 cutting-edge projects to discover how to prevent breast cancer, save lives, and help people to live well with and beyond the disease. After Stella had completed her surgical operations she reached out to Babons Cancer Support for a safe space to explore her feelings around the cancer and her uncertainties about the future.
Babons Cancer Support is a Kent-based charity dedicated
to supporting everyone affected by cancer - whether you're
a patient, carer, family member, friend, or colleague. No matter when cancer became part of your life, Babons is here
to offer emotional and well-being support. You're always welcome
to drop in for a coffee and a chat - no appointment needed.
Babons is here to help through 1:1 Counselling, Support Groups, Drop-In Emotional Support and Signposting to other services. All of the services are provided free of charge so fundraising events like Stella's really does help us to be able to support others on their cancer journey. Babons Cancer Support is a charity that exists to come alongside the cancer community of Tonbridge, whether you are the patient, carer, family member, colleague, or friend.
Babons Cancer Support has been created in memory of Jean Spickernell (called “Babon” by her grandchildren) who lost her life to cancer in 2022. Jean was a “pocket rocket” who loved her community and always looked for ways to help others even when she needed help herself.
As a family we have experience of supporting the cancer community through counselling, but then in 2020 the stories we were hearing from others became our own as Jean was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Whilst dealing with the devastating diagnosis, the journey we experienced as a family highlighted how much help we needed and how fast things changed daily with Jean’s care. We found much of our time was spent researching what we could access to make Jean as well cared for as possible and to maintain her independence and dignity. We felt very alone as a family with no one to guide us through.
Support for the local cancer community was remarkably close to Jean’s heart. Sadly, she did not live long enough to see it happen, but her family has taken up the baton and BABONS is born!
Inspired by the grandchildren, “Babon” was not only her name, but BABONS reflects exactly what Jean wanted to do for the cancer community by Bringing A Bit Of Needed Support!
Babons Cancer Support is here to help and support through Counselling, Support Groups, Drop-in Emotional Support and Signposting to Support Services.
All our services are free. We understand how cancer can have a major impact on a family’s income, leading to considerable financial hardship. It is extremely important to us that people can access our support without monetary difficulties being the reason they do not ask us for help.
You can find us in Tonbridge at 147 High Street, Tonbridge, Kent TN9 1DH, we are open Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm.
