'I'm Nobody's Magic' - Feature film on Albinism

Albinism is a rare, non-contagious, recessive genetic condition that limits the body’s ability to process melanin, reducing or eliminating pigmentation in the skin, eyes, and hair.

Many people are stigmatised because of their pale or different appearance. Dehumanising myths and superstitions lead to mockery, abandonment, and violence. Many children are murdered at birth, abused, or even targeted for body parts, in a horrific trade operating under a code of silence. Albinism is often viewed as the ‘fault’ of the mother, which tears families apart and leaves mothers ostracised. Segregation, discrimination, and a lack of understanding impedes access to healthcare, education, and suitable employment. Together, poor health and stigma create a structural cycle of violence that places people with albinism in Africa among the poorest and most vulnerable on Earth.

Purple Field Productions in association with its Malawian partners, The Kasungu Film Collective, is in the early stages of pre-production of a new dramatic feature-length film ‘I’m Nobody’s Magic’. The script has been completed with the approval of Standing Voice with whom we are partnering for oversight and distribution. Standing Voice is an international non-governmental organisation based in Tanzania, Malawi, and the UK. Founded in 2013, they promote and protect the rights of people with albinism and their families across Africa.

The story follows a pair of twins born with albinism who are split apart when their father sells the girl child to a trafficker, the children survive against all odds and are eventually reunited in their protest against discrimination and violence.

We are raising funds to complete this film, which we believe will help dispel myths, break down barriers, and bring about social change to protect those with albinism.
