Leicester Tigers to Spotlight Mental Health on Derby Day at Welford Road

Raising for Leicester Tigers Foundation

Leicester Tigers will use this weekend’s Gallagher Premiership Round 15 showdown with local rivals Northampton Saints at Mattioli Woods Welford Road on Saturday 9 May to shine a spotlight on the importance of mental wellbeing, aptly timed ahead of National Mental Health Awareness Week, which begins on Monday.

As part of PREM Rugby’s league-wide partnership with Mental Health UK, the match will focus on the simple ways fans can support their own mental health and check in on others.

On matchday, Leicester Tigers and the Leicester Tigers Foundation will join forces with PREM Rugby’s official charity partner, Mental Health UK, to encourage open conversations, raise awareness of available support and empower fans to take positive, practical steps to improve mental wellbeing across the Tigers community.

While the contest on the pitch lasts 80 minutes, rugby’s sense of connection extends far beyond the final whistle. This fixture will celebrate the game’s ability to bring people together, even in the fiercest of local rivalries on derby day, and recognise the everyday acts of bravery that help strengthen our mental health on and off the field.

Supporters of both clubs are invited to stand together in recognising the small actions that make a difference – whether that’s starting a conversation, listening, or offering support.

Rugby has the power to connect people, and as a club we want to encourage everyone to be brave, reach out to one another and help create a genuine sense of belonging for those who may be struggling.

“With Saints being one of our biggest rivals, occasions like this always create a special atmosphere – it brings everyone’s passion for the game together. We want to use our big game to highlight the support and resources available and both encourage and inspire fans to take small but meaningful steps that can positively impact their own or others mental wellbeing.

“Matchday teams be around the stadium promoting the power of conversation, collecting donations in support of Mental Health UK and Leicester Tigers Foundation and sharing information on how supporters can access help.”
