Since the mid-20th century, hedgerows have faced significant decline due to industrial farming practices, land drainage, urban expansion, and inadequate maintenance. This loss has negatively impacted Gloucestershire’s biodiversity and reduced the resilience of its natural environment.

Hedgerows are far more than just boundaries – they are vital ecosystems. They provide food and shelter for wildlife, prevent soil erosion, act as windbreaks, manage water runoff, and store carbon. These 'green corridors' help connect fragmented habitats, boost biodiversity, and support the health of the countryside we all cherish.

About our Hedgerow Heroes Project

From October 2025 to March 2026, CPRE Gloucestershire will plant and restore 2.05 kilometres of hedgerow across the county, working with farmers, landowners, and volunteers. This new phase builds on the success of previous years, further connecting habitats for birds, insects, and small mammals, while strengthening biodiversity and improving the resilience of the county’s landscapes. The work will also contribute to tackling climate change by sequestering carbon and safeguarding natural resources for future generations.

By sponsoring a hedge, you will be helping us bring back these living, breathing corridors of nature to Gloucestershire’s countryside.

This campaign page has a history! The total you see here already includes the amazing support from our 2024–25 season, when our generous donors helped us plant and restore 2.4km of hedgerows across Gloucestershire.

Now, we’re inviting you to be part of the next chapter. For the 2025–26 season, our new target is to create and restore 2.05km of hedgerow – and every donation you make from today will go directly towards achieving it.
