Since the mid-20th century, hedgerows have faced significant decline due to industrial farming practices, land drainage, urban expansion, and inadequate maintenance. This loss has negatively impacted Gloucestershire’s biodiversity and diminished the resilience of its natural environment.

Hedgerows are vital ecosystems, offering essential habitats for wildlife, preventing soil erosion, acting as windbreaks, and managing water runoff. These “green corridors” help to connect fragmented habitats, promote biodiversity, and support the health of surrounding ecosystems.

Our Hedgerow Heroes Project

From September 2024 to April 2025, we aim to restore crucial habitat links, support endangered species like the Duke of Burgundy butterfly, and provide food, shelter, and breeding grounds for a variety of wildlife.

Our goal is to plant 2.4 kilometres of hedgerow across Gloucestershire, bolstering the resilience and biodiversity of our countryside for generations to come. Find out about our project sites.
