This is the beginning of an amazing project
AMECA was founded in December 2006 by Ruth Markus, in memory of her only child, Lt. Alex Coutselos, a doctor in the British Army, who died on 15th October 2006, aged 23.
AMECA believe that healthcare in Africa can only be effectively addressed by an improvement in both the training and the retention of healthcare professionals. We also firmly believe that our initiatives should be sustainable over the long term, rather than provide a well intentioned but unsustainable “quick fix” approach.

Malawi will graduate its first home-trained dentists in early 2025. However, there is a shortage of well-equipped dental surgeries in Malawi’s Health Centres, where the country’s most needy patients attend for care. Dental extraction is the mainstay for relief of dental pain. The MalDent Project is now developing an exemplar dental clinic in the Health Centre at Chilomoni, a village just outside Blantyre with a catchment of 63,000 patients. Once operational, this clinic, the first of its kind at a Health Centre, will transform the dental treatment options for patients and allow dental professionals to use their full range of clinical skills.
The dental clinic will also serve as a dental outreach teaching facility.
The building work, funded by AMECA, is currently underway to convert an existing structure into a two-surgery dental clinic. The campaign is to raise funds to support the purchase of dental equipment required to complete the project.
