Just felt we had to donate as this phone box was a important part of my early relationship with my husband of 43 years as he lived in Truro and I lived in the village. It was our only means of communication during the week when we didn't see each other, well before the days of mobile phones. Many happy memories of dark nights chatting to him in that phone box. Always be grateful to Porthtowan 494.

The Old Phone Box - Mount Hawke

Event dates: Tuesday 31st August 2021 – Thursday 30th September 2021

A few locals have come forward and kindly volunteered to repair and repaint the old phone box on the corner of Rope Walk and Fore Street. A icon of the village, its location in the “old yard” would have been chosen for its proximity to the old post office. Back in 2020 the VCA (Village Community Association) secured the ownership of the phone box from BT for a princely sum of £1, however the materials to refurbish it will amount to quite a bit more than that!

The VCA is asking for donations towards the costs of the painting materials of £131 (sorry we got the number wrong!) and a new solar powered light £60.

The Carylon Family have kindly donated the painting equipment and Rabbart Decorating centre have supplied some floor paint.

Please donate what you can, every £1 helps and the box will soon return to its former glory!

We are always looking for volunteers to join in with projects like this around the village so if you fancy getting involved, drop us a message on social media @mounthawkegreen where we can put you in touch with the right people in the village.

We’ve had some questions about the costs involved. The price of the paint - the same stuff sold to BT by the specialists to repaint their phone boxes is the recommended paint - is price comparative to similar brands. However, It’s better than Hammerite, it’s better than any paint available at B&Q, it’s the paint professionals use. We did our homework and checked to make sure we made the right decision. You can check out the info for yourself at X2 Connect, the phone box specialists.

And the solar light, we’ve all bought cheap lights from the garden centre that only give off light in summer months, that only stay lit for a few hours and if they last long enough to see the next season they don’t last much longer as rain gets in and the batteries fail. We want a light that will last, one with a warranty, one that will stay lit every night and one that will stay lit for years to come. So again, we did our homework and found a light with great reviews, a warranty and a company who gave us a discount for being a charity.

Hello lovely villagers! Thanks to your generosity we have purchased the paint and look forward to getting the brushes out! We had hoped to start ASAP, however, with unexpected commitments of a few key volunteers we have missed the dry weather window for the autumn and with your understanding we have decided to postpone the painting until the spring. This will also give us some time to
rope in a few more volunteers to wield some sandpaper and paintbrushes and ensure we get the phone box back to its former glory as soon as possible. Thank you again for your understanding.
