Love to support a water/sanitation project.

About us

The Uphill Trust supports grass roots education in rural western Uganda: Uphill Junior School, a privately-owned primary school with kindergarten, was founded by a Ugandan teacher in February 2011 and provides educational opportunities for girls, orphans and children from poor rural families.

We are helping the school to build well equipped school buildings, maintain a motivated and well-qualified teaching staff, provide clean water and good sanitation, and support the education of girls and orphans.

When funding is available we also support projects that benefit the wider community, such as provision of mosquito nets, solar lanterns and reading glasses for the community elders.

The Uphill Trust is a zero-overheads charity - 100% of the money you donate is used to support Uphill Junior School.

Education is power!

2023 Christmas Appeal

A new toilet block is urgently needed for staff and visitors at Uphill Junior School! We built the current 'temporary' long drop latrine in 2018 and it is no longer fit for purpose. It is in the wrong place, the pit is almost full and there are only 2 small cubicles with little privacy and no disabled access.

With no mains waste or water systems in rural Uganda, we plan to install compost toilets instead of the traditional ventilated improved pit latrines used elsewhere on the school site. These will offer an eco-friendly, cleaner, less smelly and fly-free sanitation option, with the added benefit of using the composted end-products to enhance soil fertility in the school gardens.

Appeal donations will be used to build the new staff-visitor toilet block, along with 2-3 large composting bins. They will also fund the equipment and materials needed to get the project up and running.

The Uphill compost toilets will be the first example of eco-sanitation in the area and will be used to demonstrate the benefits of this technology to the wider community.

Please can you help us to be an eco-toilet trail blazer?

ANY EXTRA FUNDS RAISED WILL HELP PROVIDE A WATER HARVESTING SYSTEM. YOU CAN NEVER COLLECT TOO MUCH WATER IN OFF GRID AREAS OF RURAL UGANDA!

Our updates

We retrofitted two compost toilet cubicles in the existing staff latrine as a project prototype - the staff are delighted to be free of the smelly, fly ridden latrine pit!

Huge thanks to everyone who donated to this appeal. The Uphill compost toilet trial will begin in February when we are in Uganda for our annual trustee visit!
