“Ashby, Coleorton and the English Civil War” - A Talk by Ken Hillier of Ashby Museum

Event date: Thursday 10th April

Location: Bright Hope House, Talbot Lane, Swannington, LE67 8QT

Time: 6.30pm for 7pm

Ken explains the background to the outbreak of the Great Civil War in 1642 and then concentrates on the local area, particularly focusing on the 'enemy strongholds' of Royalist Ashby Castle and Parliamentarian Coleorton. Ashby was a key fortress, like Newark, in keeping open the line of communication - and troops and munitions - between the Royalist North East and West Midlands.

Ken Hillier helped found Ashby Museum in 1981/2 and has been involved ever since - for many years as Chairman of Trustees. He has written books on Ashby including its role in the Civil Wars.
