Description:
Over 1 million children in the UK struggle to communicate and a child who finds communicating hard, finds life hard. They struggle to speak in sentences or understand simple instructions and as a result they cant follow lessons and quickly fall behind. Neither do they understand social rules and so find it hard to make friends. As time progresses and other children start to race ahead, they pick up labels like slow, lazy or naughty. As their frustration grows, their behaviour often worsens and the risk of school exclusion increases. With support, however, outcomes can be very positive and as the UKs leading communication charity, I CANs mission is to ensure that no child who struggles to communicate is left out or left behind.
In addition to our two special schools which give expert care and education to children with problems so severe their needs cannot be met elsewhere, we strive to improve outcomes for many more children in schools across the UK by:
Raising public awareness of the problems children face.
Giving expert advice to parents and families about what to look out for and what to do.
Assessing childrens needs so that their families know what support will help them progress.
Providing teachers and people working with children the skills and tools to help children who struggle.
Campaigning to ensure children and families get a better deal.
