Description:
La Serenissima is the UK's leading exponent of the music of eighteenth century Venice with a vision to share Italian baroque music as widely as possible. We are a period-instrument orchestra with a track record in promoting the scholarship, interpretation and appreciation of Italian baroque music through research, concerts, workshops, talks and recordings; we give professional opportunities to a significant number of young artists fresh from conservatoire training. We regularly present programmes that combine 'blockbuster' musical works with unknown or rarely-performed repertoire in order to appeal to the greatest cross-section of audience and to introduce more music to new listeners. Uniquely, we perform exclusively from our own editions. Our CDs receive international acclaim, regular airplay on Classic FM and BBC Radio 3 and are available to all via streaming. We have been described by critics as having "an avant-garde approach that would have awed Hendrix" (The Guardian) and "a glorious and all-too-rare ability to make one's pulse race afresh with every new project" (Gramophone). Founded because of one person's life-changing childhood response to the music of Vivaldi, we have twice won the Gramophone Award for Baroque Instrumental music (2010 & 2017); our contribution to Italian culture has been recognised by a partnership with the Italian Embassy in London.
