Description:
QVSR, a seafaring charity established in 1843, has a long history of serving those in need, both on land and at sea. The Queen Victoria Seamen's Rest in Poplar, in the East End of London, provides a safe haven for up to 175 active and retired seafarers, ex-servicemen and other homeless men. We have a Welfare Team to assist residents with benefit applications and access to individual grants. They also support them with medical and emotional issues through signposting to appropriate organisations. Our aim is to provide a shelter for residents for as long as they need, a place where they can maintain their independence and live as part of a community, a place where they can find simple companionship, training and employment opportunities or assistance with a move back to more independent living. Funding received through Give As You Live will help to provide welfare services to those in need.
As a seafaring charity our work extends to the Ports of Tilbury, Felixstowe, Immingham and Bristol where we manage our QVSR Seafarers Centres. As an island nation, with over 95% of our everyday goods coming by sea, QVSR is committed to providing first class port-based welfare services to active seafarers visiting our shores. Unfortunately, the welfare of the seafarers who bring us our supplies is often neglected and our seafarers’ centres provide a warm welcome and pastoral support for those who can spend up to 9 months at sea and who are far from home and family. We aim to provide a place where seafarers can feel “at home”, where they can catch up with family and friends via the internet and relax in comfort away from the ship. Funding received through Give As You Live will help to provide port-based welfare services to active seafarers.
