Description:
The Sailors Society is a worldwide Christian charity supporting seafarers without distinction for nationality or faith. It exists to enrich and enhance seafarers lives and replace their isolation with belonging.
It is the oldest maritime society of its kind in the world; tracing is roots back to 1818.
When ships dock today their crews are invariably berthed in a highly mechanised environment, contained within a patrolled security zone, often far from normal human habitation. The opportunity to go ashore is constrained by the increasingly demanding routine of shipboard life. But to combat the social isolation the crews still have a desire to get off the ship and refresh their mind and spirit after long periods at sea.
The Sailors' Society provides a personal lifeline for seafarers on board and when they step ashore. Through a network of Port Chaplains and Seafarers' Centres in 100 ports across 30 countries, the Sailors' Society offers seafarers practical help and welfare, spiritual support and when in dire need, financial assistance and family liaison. Our Port Chaplains visit thousands of ships every year and are often the first to notice when all is not well on board.
The Port Chaplains of the Sailors' Society offer a friendly presence, unconditionally greeting seafarers where they meet them. This may be on the Chaplains regular visit to ships to dispnse phone cards. newsprint from home and local knowledge, or transporting crew to a nearby Centre where facilities such as telephone and internet access and recreation are available and they may relax in some comfort.
Sailors' Society Port Chaplains enjoy a special trusted status with seafarers the world over and whilst remaining impartial, above all else their objective is to help replace isolation with a sense of belonging.
