Description:
Toc H is a modern charity which grew out of the horrors of the First World War and an early momentum to avoid a repetition of suffering. Over the last 90 years, the charity’s work has changed as it responds to the differing needs of society, but the ideals with which it began remain.
Based in some of the most disadvantaged communities in the UK, Toc H works alongside people at a local level to enable them to contribute and participate in community life. The charity’s objective is to promote active people by equipping individuals with key skills to become more involved in their school, family, neighbourhood and community. It aims to break down the barriers which prevent individuals and groups from engaging with others, encouraging volunteering and mutual support. Many of Toc H’s centres are based in ethnically diverse communities and its staff work alongside local people to provide the services and support they need.
Inner-city gardening projects encourage people to grow fresh fruit and vegetables, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses and family support groups encourage inclusion. All of Toc H’s community centres offer a wide range of activities such as drama, dance, social events and many have creche facilities and free internet access.
Toc H’s services also include youth mentoring, training and family support with particular focus on young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEETS). Its experienced youth workers help young people to make positive life choices and empower them to lead fulfilling and productive lives.
