In this talk, Meg Hyland will share her research about the role music played in the lives of herring gutters in the Scottish fishing industry from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries.
From work songs and protest songs to ceilidhs
in the gutting huts, she will explore the varied musical expressions of herring gutters based on her research in oral history archives and ethnographic interviews.
Meg Hyland is a PhD candidate in Celtic and Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh. She holds an MSc in Celtic and Scottish Studies from the University of Edinburgh and an MA (Hons) Mediaeval History from the University of St Andrews.
This is a joint project run by High Life Highland’s Archive Service in partnership with Suffolk Archives, the Norfolk Record Office, and Tasglann nan Eilean (the Hebridean Archives).
