My story
October 2025 was the month I got the call no one ever wants.
The “shadow” they’d found on my left lung was confirmed to be an aggressive form of cancer.
Not exactly the plot twist I had planned for the end of the year.
A few weeks later, while everyone else was celebrating New Year’s Eve with champagne and fireworks, I was in Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust recovering from surgery to remove the lower half of my left lung… and very, very high on hospital drugs.
Honestly, 2026 got off to a pretty wild start.
Thankfully, my journey moved quickly. My cancer was caught early, treated swiftly, and now I’m out the other side — half a lung lighter and slowly rebuilding myself physically and mentally.
But I know how lucky I am.
For so many people, the journey is much longer, much harder, and filled with uncertainty. Some people face devastating odds, and some sadly don’t get the ending they deserve.
One of the things that helped me through all of this was the incredible support from Cancer United.
What this amazing charity has taught me is that cancer doesn’t always have to mean doom and gloom. There can still be laughter. There can still be smiles. There can still be strength, friendship, and community.
I now attend regular gym sessions with some of the most inspiring women I’ve ever met — every single one with their own story, their own battles, and their own reasons to keep fighting.
No one ever wants to hear the “C word”, but there ARE people out there who help make the road a little less lonely.
So… in what feels like a completely sensible and rational decision, I’ve signed up for my first ever ultra marathon.
50km.
In ridiculous conditions.
In another country.
Because apparently surviving cancer wasn’t quite enough drama for one year.
So if you have any spare pennies and would like to support both me and this incredible charity, I would be unbelievably grateful.
