Adam White is raising money for DEBRA
My name is Adam White. I am 25 and from the UK. Ever since I was a young boy, I have suffered badly with severe blistering on the soles of my feet and the palms of my hands. These symptoms can arise after short periods of time, for example by walking to school. This is because of a condition called Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS). This is a rare, inherited disorder in which the skin is fragile and blisters easily in places where it is rubbed or scratched. Not aware of this at a young age, I just assumed I blistered easily on my hands and feet. Thus, I continued to achieve physical and sporting achievements. This included being a regional open-water swimming champion, county-level cross country runner, sponsored BMX rider. I also test myself and my body with challenges such as multiple Tough Mudders and the David Goggin's 4x4x48. Then my childhood dream come true and I was accepted in the the Royal Navy to become a submariner. However, one day on base I was sent to the medical bay following an intense training session with a serious infection I caught in one of my feet. At this point, my foot had just over 20 blisters. In the medical bay, it was discovered that I was suffering from EBS. Unfortunately, after a few days the decision was made that I was to be medically discharged. Before I knew it, my dream was over and I was heading home. After feeling lost and not sure where life will take me, I decided to make an impact. My mission now is to raise awareness about this horrible condition. Hopefully I can help find a cure for people like me, and for those who EBS effects even worse. I will be putting myself in uncomfortable conditions and showing the effects of EBS. With your help, hopefully we can speed up the search for a cure. I want to help those around the world who suffer from EBS. Hopefully, this will also allow me to re-achieve my dream of serving in the Royal Navy's submarine service. For the first challenge I will be completing a 100km Triathlon. This will consist of a 2km swim, 80km cycle and finishing with an 18km run.
