CAMINO DE SANTIAGO FOR MND AND DEMENTIA

Our story

The Camino De Santiago is an ancient pilgrimage which has a number of different routes.......The Camino Inglés is one of the recognised final legs covering a distance of 115km from Ferrol on the Galician coast to the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, where St James is believed to be buried. We aim to cover the route over 5 days.
Its a fair challenge for a couple of guys over 60years old so we thought we'd see if we could make it an event that would raise money for worthy causes. the money raised will be split between MND(through Leeds Hospital) and Dementia UK as both of us have lost people close to our hearts to these terrible illnesses. If you feel inclined to support these worthy causes we would be extremely grateful.

Thank you for checking out our page. Making a donation is fast, easy and secure thanks to Give as you Live Donate. They'll take your donation and pass it onto Leeds Hospitals Charity and Dementia UK.

Our updates

Dave and I walked into Santiago this morning around 11-00 with our lovely wives waiting for us. We made our way to the Pilgrim office and both received our official Compostela confirming how far we have walked. An emotional end to a challenging 5 days of walking. Thank you for your heartfelt support and help along the way!  We went into the cathedral and lit a candle for Sue and Reg. xx

Day 4 on paper should have been an easy day!  However the weather app was wrong and we were treated to the worst weather of the trip so far. Despite wearing ponchos and seemingly having the right gear, within the first hour our socks and hiking shoes were soaked which is not good news when you have another 3 plus hours of walking to do! Motivational songs suggested by you our supporters kept us going when our spirits were down. We had another minor snag when we reached Siguiero delaying us a bit, but nothing too drastic. During the day we achieved our fundraising goal which we are truly grateful for. And there is still more to come. Thank you so much. We have the final 17km to walk tomorrow to reach Santiago and attend the Pilgrims mass at noon, so it’s another early start for us. In the four days we have been walking we have now exceeded 100km. Thanks again for your support.

As I posted yesterday Day 3 was going to be the biggest challenge and it didn’t disappoint. We were walking uphill for around 6 hours and every time we removed our ponchos it rained, so we decided to leave them on for the duration of the 8 hour walk. We walked 31.3km which, added to our previous total means we have surpassed 80km (50miles). Both of us have the blisters to match the distance we have walked but it’s all in a good cause. Although only a 17km walk today we are aching. We are heading to the town of Sigüeiro.
We had a good day yesterday for donations which we are so grateful for. Thank you all.

The first 2 days of our 5 day pilgrimage from Ferrol to Santiago de Compostela have gone well. We have walked 50km of the 115km of the journey. Day 1 saw us walk from Ferrol to the medieval town of Pontedeume. Day 2 saw us climb a fair way over 3 different hills before descending into Betanzos, the prettiest town on our journey so far. Today is our toughest day. We have a 32km (20miles) walk that will see us climb for around 6 hours. The weather has been a challenge so far and today looks like being the worst with rain forecast for most of the day. It’s been raining all night so the tracks are going to be muddy.
Thanks to everyone that has donated so far. I am doing this walk for Sue Ramsey who we lost to MND and my walking buddy Dave is remembering his Dad Reg by raising money for Dementia.

Thank you
