Lewis Jones is raising money for Codebar
Hi everyone, I'm Lewis 👋
Before signing up for this, I'd never run more than 10km before, but I was lucky enough to get an opportunity to run the London Landmarks Half Marathon whilst supporting codebar, and figured it'd be a great way to challenge myself whilst raising some much-needed funds for a much-deserving cause!
codebar is a charity that provides a safe and collaborative environment for members of minority and underrepresented groups to learn programming. They do this by running weekly free workshops and events, where volunteers (usually software developers or other techy professionals) offer free coaching to people who might otherwise not be able to access it.
I've been a coach with codebar at various points over the past few years, and it's always so rewarding to be there and great to see so many new people making their way into the tech world - and such a great community!
I'm aiming to raise £600 for this, and I found this opportunity at quite late notice (T minus 6 weeks) - so I'm going to need your help to raise the funds together quickly!
Please donate whatever you can afford and/ or share the link if you're happy to. Suggested donation (if you prefer): the price of a lunch or two (or three? 👀).
Also, remember to add Gift Aid if you can - it donates an extra 25% at no cost to you!
Thanks for reading - I'll try to post regular updates from my training! 😁
Thank you for checking out my page. Making a donation is fast, easy and secure thanks to Give as you Live Donate. They'll take your donation and pass it onto Codebar.
Race day:
I made it! And I managed to beat my target time of 1h45m, despite things being a bit chaotic due to starting at the back of a wave that was aiming for 2h30m (required lots of dodging between people). My knee was still painful, but again not too bad once I got warmed up, all things considered. 😌
I'm just about able to walk normally again now (3 days later), so I'm considering booking myself in for another half in the coming months (I was hoping to complete it in under 1h30m)! 😁
Thanks so much to everyone who helped us reach the donation target! You've all contributed critical funds that will go towards codebar's work of supporting members of underrepresented groups on their journeys into software engineering/ technologist careers. 🙌🧑💻🙏
Training week 8:
This week felt promising, as I managed to practice a little bit of pace, pace+distance, and distance on three separate runs, without too much bother from my knee! 🏃➡️🏃➡️🏃➡️
This was my last week of training - after this, I decided to take a full week off immediately prior to the race to give my knee a good chance to recover. It feels a bit better, so I'm hopeful for the race, but we'll have to see how it goes! 🤞😁🤞
Training week 7:
For the short run this week, I decided to try out going a bit faster again, with ambiguous results. Later, I mixed it up a bit with a casual long run down by the beach, and actually ran in parallel to a race that was happening in the area - it was an interesting, serendipitous trial of running in a real race environment, with lots of people around; great prep! 😁
Training week 6:
I had a slight setback this week, as I got knocked off my bike and landed in a 20mph knee-slide down the middle of the road. It could have been worse though, as I didn't get any other injuries, and the bruising was mostly gone within a couple of weeks. Needless to say, I continued to rest - but I still needed to get my longest run in before tapering off, so here's the results of that! 🚴
Training week 5:
Even the moderate 5km I did this week felt like it was doing more harm than good, so I decided to rest for the remainder of this week - rather frustrating, but hopefully it gets better soon! 🤞
