Helping Girls in Rwanda Through Cricket

This February, I’ll be heading back out to Rwanda with Hampshire Cricket to support a group of incredible young girls who are being given the chance to play cricket.

Here in England, children can pick up a bat and ball at school or join a local club without much thought. Sadly, in Rwanda it’s very different. Families face daily struggles just to get by — many don’t have running water, food is limited, and sports equipment is far beyond what they can afford. Yet despite all of this, these girls show so much passion, joy, and determination when given the chance to play.

Some of you will know that I travelled out there last year, and it was truly life-changing. Alongside cricket coaching, we worked on a number of community projects, including:

• Helping the girls develop their cricket skills and confidence
• Teaching period health, so young women feel supported and empowered
• Building chicken coops to help families create a sustainable income
• Installing cricket nets at a local school, leaving something lasting behind

One of the most moving things I experienced was the Porridge Club, set up by the Indatwa Foundation with Hampshire Cricket. So many children arrive at school having eaten nothing at all. This simple project provides them with a bowl of porridge once a week, giving them the energy to concentrate and learn — something we can so easily take for granted.

The Indatwa Foundation doesn’t just help grow cricket for women and girls; it’s also about supporting communities to live healthier, happier lives.
