34 miles/ 36 photos for ASIRT

Event date: 15th November 2015

Dan Burwood is raising money for ASIRT

My story

This is a short lead, and requiring of a double faith in what I'm proposing- that I can run, and take the photos- but here we go:

I'm running a long, hilly race, in a beautiful place that I've always known and that roots the landscapes of my dreams and imagination: The Gower. By telling you about this I'm raising hopefully money and awareness on behalf of an organisation that does a lot of good. I know and know of many people whose extremely difficult circumstances have been mitigated at times of dire need by them, and by other related organisations.

This is to raise money to support the ongoing work of ASIRT. I'm asking you to consider sponsoring me through this page to do this race to support this work. I'm going to race with a 35mm compact camera and shoot 36 frames of colour transparency film as I race. I'll make one 12x16" print of each - at my own expense - and post one of each to 36 donors, if there are that many, according to amount then time of donation. I've been training, long runs, 25 miles tomorrow, and I'm a good photographer: I'll try and run a good race and take some good photos. One at the beginning, 34 along the way, then one at the end.

This is what ASIRT does:
(After is a link to the race)

'We are a not-for-profit OISC-registered advocacy organisation working to support asylum-seekers, refugees and other people in the West Midlands who are or have been subject to immigration control.

We work to provide prompt, independent advocacy support throughout the West Midlands, providing advice on immigration, and asylum and following this up through casework, the submission of representations to the Home Office, welfare support and Tribunal representation.

We work in partnership with other statutory and voluntary agencies to provide services for asylum-seekers and refugees. We also advocate for changes within these agencies to meet the needs of asylum-seeking and refugee communities.

We recruit and train local volunteers for employment and self-sufficiency, taking short- and long-term student placements.

We run educational awareness-raising talks for schools, colleges, workplaces, community groups and trade unions, challenging media myths around asylum and immigration, and have developed packages of training around migrants' health and social welfare rights for delivery to regional partner organisations.

We work in partnership with other voluntary, community and statutory agencies, under the umbrella of the Destitution Support Steering Group, to assess, monitor and address the needs of asylum-seeking communities in Birmingham and the West Midlands.'
