Emma Beynon is raising money for Codebar

My story

This October I'll be hauling myself around the streets of Portsmouth for 10 miles as I partake in the Great South run to raise much-needed funds for codebar. codebar is an amazing charity that supports diversity in the tech community by running free regular programming workshops for minority groups in tech. The diversity statistics for the tech industry are pretty woeful; ethnic minorities make up only 15.2% of the tech labour market in the UK, while women account for around 25.5%. codebar aims to change this by offering free coding workshops as well as one-off events across the UK and beyond, making the tech industry more accessible and welcoming to a wider range of people. I've seen the amazing work that codebar does first hand, both as a student when I decided to change careers 8 years ago, and as a coach helping students take their first steps into the industry. This charity plays an essential part in making the tech industry a better place and is reliant on donations to keep going. codebar has seen a 60% drop in corporate support over the past year as the tech industry has tightened its belt, so I would love your help to make sure it can continue to do this brilliant work.

Thank you for checking out my page. Making a donation is fast, easy and secure thanks to Give as you Live Donate. They'll take your donation and pass it onto Codebar.

My updates

Hi everyone,
Since the Great South Run was sadly cancelled, I’ve discussed the options available with codebar. Instead of rolling over the place to next year we decided to take up the organisers’ offer to complete the distance independently and submit proof to claim a proxy race completion, meaning we can retain the donations (and I get a medal & T-shirt!). I’m glad to share that I completed the 10 mile distance last weekend along Brighton seafront, which makes that my personal record for longest distance run. I wanted to extend my deepest thanks to all of you for your incredibly generous donations which gave me a lot of motivation to train, even in wet and windy conditions over the past few months, and most importantly enables codebar to fund their excellent work.

Hi everyone,
You may have seen the news that the Great South Run was cancelled yesterday due to adverse weather conditions in Portsmouth over the weekend. The forecasted winds and gusts compromised event infrastructure such as the medical tents, and high tide levels meant there was a risk of debris, so the organisers felt that they could not deliver the event safely. While it's disappointing to not be able to take part after training so hard for it, it's not worth putting people's safety at risk.
As for what happens next, my main concern is what happens to your incredibly generous donations. I'm waiting for an update from the Great South Run about options to potentially roll over my entry to next year, and codebar are in touch with Run for Charity to understand what the implications are for them. I know how much codebar needs these funds, so hopefully we will find a resolution which works for everyone. I'll let you know when I have an update.
Thanks again for your support,
Emma

After only a few days of fundraising, we have already hit the target! Thanks so much to everyone for your generous donations, I know everyone at codebar will be delighted. I’m going to increase my target so we can hopefully raise even more for this brilliant charity. In the meantime I’m working on increasing the distance I can run without stopping. Hoping to reach 8k this weekend, which will be about half of the race distance in total 🤞🏻
