Enable the Children development in Liberia

My story

In January 2011, I traveled to Sierra Leone for what I thought would be a year, but that ended up being extended to two. I then said that I would work with Enable the Children for six months, and here I am twelve years later.

To give you a background, Enable the Children (ETC), a program under World Hope International since 2015, provides children living with disabilities (CLWDs) with in-home and clinic based physiotherapy and occupational therapy support as well as psycho-social counselling and support to the families and sensitization to the community leaders. We also provide training to rehabilitation workers and teach at the Physiotherapy school which has now graduated two cohorts of physios - we now have 20 BSc physios in country compared to one when I arrived! We also work with teachers, pastors, and organisations to promote inclusion and support the rights and care of CLWDs and their families, and stop the high levels of stigma that they face. After doing this work for many years in Sierra Leone, we have started to take our knowledge and skills to Liberia to strengthen care of CLWDs.

Liberia currently has one physiotherapist, Sam, in country. He is located at John F. Kennedy (JFK) Hospital in Monrovia and works with two nurses to provide physiotherapy services at the Monrovia Rehabilitation Center. Since June 2023, we have been working to train and develop the therapy service provision at JFK, including teaching and the fabrication of our locally made equipment to be provided to JFK. We have also trained community health workers to be able to refer CLWDs to the facility and also trained pastors and community leaders in disability inclusion.

In order to further the work here, I have been asked to spend more of my time in Liberia than Sierra Leone. This is not an easy ask as Sierra Leone is my home. However, as I spent the past year holding interim director roles, the ETC team in Sierra Leone have learned to do the work without much of my input and so I feel the need to be more based in Liberia as there is A LOT of work to do here in the rehabilitation and disability space.

In Liberia, ETC also supports seven children living with amputations to go to school and for them to be able to get a prosthesis and stump revisions as needed.

At present, we do not have much money raised for our work here and so I am reaching out to people that I know to see whether you would be willing to give, even a little, to get this work going. Many thanks for reading and for your kind support!
