Our story
2000 Not Out: Two Runners, One Marathon, and a Thousand Pounds for Rwanda
On 30 January, Tanya and Gareth are attempting an epic paired innings; 2000 runs not out. We’re combining our love of running with our love of cricket, pushing ourselves to cover over 2000 ‘runs’. The equivalent of a full marathon, our aim is to raise £1,000 for Cricket Without Boundaries.
Why?
Because in Rwanda, cricket isn’t just a game. It’s a lifeline. Cricket Without Boundaries uses sport to keep children in education, teach basic health and life skills, and create safe spaces, especially for girls.
This challenge will hurt. But that discomfort lasts a day. The impact of your donation lasts far longer.
We’re running for the kids who don’t get trainers, tracks or coaches. We’re running so cricket can open doors where opportunities are limited. £1,000 raised = real equipment, trained coaches, and life-changing sessions on the ground in Rwanda. If you’ve ever loved cricket, running, or just a good innings please back us.
Help us get to 2000 runs not out and create lasting change for children in Rwanda.
Your Impact
- £5 – Provides basic cricket equipment for a child who’s never owned any
- £10 – Supports a coaching session combining sport with health education
- £25 – Helps train local coaches so the impact lasts long after we’ve gone
- £50 – Funds a full community cricket session reaching dozens of young people
Small amounts. Real change.
If cricket has ever given you friendship, confidence or joy, please help pass that on.
Thank you for supporting something that truly goes beyond the boundary
Why Rwanda?
Rwanda is one of the youngest countries in the world — more than half the population is under 25. Many children grow up in poverty, in overcrowded schools, with limited access to sport, health education and positive role models. For girls especially, chances to take part in organised sport can be rare.
Cricket Without Boundaries works in Rwanda because sport cuts through where words don’t. Rwanda has made incredible progress since the 1994 genocide, but many communities still face poverty, overcrowded schools and limited resources. Cricket may seem small. But for a child who’s never owned sports kit, never been coached, never been encouraged, it can be life-changing.
- A bat becomes confidence.
- A team becomes belonging.
- A game becomes a future.
In a country still rebuilding from its past, cricket offers something powerful and simple:
structure, confidence and hope. This is why we’re running. Not just for the challenge, but for the chance to help change a young person’s future.

Our updates
Bit of training at the week. Event specific. Making sure the course is all set for us.
Today's training run was focussed on getting the distance. 21k may not seem far, but really, it is. Especially on a 20m course. Will our legs make it? Will our knees collapse at turn 900, will we be exhausted?! How will we deal with the mental game of running on a 20m course?
This is why we train. And I'm also doing strength work for my knees. Just in case.
Today we managed to slowly do 16km over the beautiful South Downs, but really we do need to run the wicket and practice those turns... and see how we deal with the monotony... and banging tunes we can listen to? What do you recommend?
As so the training begins! In this image you can clearly see the route we are planning to run. It starts at the 100m sprint start line, heads towards the 80m sprint start line, then there is and immediate 180 degree sharp turn, and then we head back to the 100m start line, we need to do this about 2000 times between us. Which, with a few more added for good measure, will give us a a cricket wicket marathon. 2000 runs not out. Hopefully we will but in a better show than the England Men's cricket team.
This was only the start, much slower than I thought it would be, Garmin was clocking about 6 min kms while I was running. Clearly I didn't think about the slow, turn and speed up phase of this marathon route. The run will take longer than I thought it would. Running the 2k also showed me how completely mind numbing 100 lengths of a 20m course can be. I'm hoping that my knees hold out too. There are a lot of turns.
More to come. I hope to do at least a 10k on the wicket. I probably need to subscribe to Spotify. I hope it isn't raining or too windy on the 30th January.
If you can, please share this page, drop a fiver into the pot. The more we get, the more impact we can create.
