My story
Why I am supporting codebar
Next May I will be running the Hackney Half to raise money for codebar, a charity very close to my heart. codebar runs free workshops and events to enable people from underrepresented groups to learn coding who otherwise would be excluded from gaining these skills for financial reasons.
Attending codebar workshops was essential to my own journey when I was switching careers into tech 6 years ago. I knew I wanted to learn how to code, but I was overwhelmed and didn't know where to start. Luckily I found out about codebar workshops in London, where I not only benefitted from coaching, but I also found a community of role models that helped demystify the tech industry.
The work that codebar does to make the tech industry more accessible is even more important in the era of AI. Having a diverse team when developing AI products is paramount to making sure they are innovative and inclusive.
Why I am running a half marathon
You're right to question this - what would possess me?! This race will be a physical challenge for me as I had knee surgery last year to repair a ruptured ACL I sustained whilst doing really cool ski stunts. A major goal for my recovery was getting strong enough to be able to run again. With help from my physiotherapist I have been given the permission to run, but now I need the motivation! Every donation will push me closer to the finish line, and get me out for training in the bleak British winter months.
Thank you!
