Kalahari Garden Project

This project is helping the San Bushmen feed themselves and their families and re-establish a sense of self reliance, through the creation of kitchen gardens in the desert. Due to loss of land and marginalisation resulting from years of colonial and apartheid regimes, the San have become a dependent population, no longer able to survive by hunting and gathering alone. Without the gardens they live on a diet of maize porridge, sugar and tea, and occasional and illegally hunted meat. The gardens provide an all year round source of nutritious food and have alleviated problems of persistent hunger. Hunger in southern Africa can lead to survival sex and the spread of HIV among vulnerable populations. Please donate generously to help us continue with the training and building of more gardens, develop a rain fed school garden, create an indigenous vegetation garden and run nutritional workshops within the community.
