Tough Mudder June 2013

Event date: 8th June 2013

Joel King is raising money for UFM WORLDWIDE

My story

Hi, and thanks for visiting my page. As some of you may already know I have decided (somewhat foolishly) to take part in Tough Mudder on the 8th June 2013 which is a 12 mile run and obstacle course designed by the special forces to be as gruelling as possible! This is the first time I have done anything like this (and maybe the last) but hopefully it will be a good experience at the very least!

I would like to take this opportunity to raise some money for a cause which is close to my family and me. The charity I am raising money for are called UFM worldwide. UFM Worldwide are a religious charity, and although neither my family nor I are religious, we are raising money for UFM as they have agreed to ring fence any money which we raise and channel it to support charity work for local communities in the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo).

My mum spent the first 10 years or so of her life living in what is now the DRC and my grandparents and uncle and auntie were eventually killed there during the troubles of 1964 while my mum and her eldest brother were at boarding school in the UK.
My mum and uncle visited the DRC last year for the first time in 50 years to see the place where they grew up and where their parents and brother and sister had been killed. During their visit they were welcomed by everyone, some people who even remembered their family from when they were kids. They saw people living in extreme poverty and were so moved by the huge challenges they face every day just to survive, they decided to try and help by raising money to support charity work for the local communities in the DRC.

Any sponsorship, however big or small will be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Joel
