Jonathan Cockerton is raising money for Breakout Youth
On Sunday 14th April, I will be running the Brighton Marathon and I will be raising money for Breakout Youth.
I initially signed up solely to be able to tick "running a marathon" off my bucket list. The rigours of training made me realise though that I have a great opportunity here to give back at a time of personal achievement.
When deciding on a charity to run for, I considered what was most important to me and what I felt most passionate about...
Becoming a father in 2016 changed my perspective on everything!
Ensuring my daughter, and her sister, arriving later this year, are brought up feeling supported, interested, included and happy, whilst possessing the empathy to ensure that everyone around them feels the same, is in my mind, what parenting is all about.
Everybody is different, that is what makes the world so amazing. However, sometimes, people either struggle with their own differences or are unable to easily be themselves due to their environments. People, and especially young people, should never feel that they don't have the support they need when things aren't easy.
Based locally to me is a charity called Breakout Youth. The charity was set up in Southampton in 1993 in response to the dangers faced by LGBTQ+ youth at the time. As well as supporting young people, Breakout Youth also supports the campaign against homophobia and transphobia in the local area and beyond.
Any charities offering support to young people are in my eyes, heroes, and it is therefore, my pleasure to be running the Brighton Marathon on their behalf.
Any donations to this epic charity would be immensely appreciated.
Jonny
